Never Be Left in the Dark: Why a Home Backup Generator Makes Sense

Power outages in Ontario are no longer rare. It seems they’re a recurring reality and expected to increase. From early spring storms to deep winter freezes and increasingly frequent summer heat waves, losing power can have serious consequences.

More homeowners are investing in home backup generators as a way to guarantee comfort, protect critical home systems, and—most importantly—keep their families safe. Here, we explain why your household may benefit from residential standby power.

What is a home backup generator, and how does it work?

There are two options: a portable generator that requires manual setup and refuelling, and a standby backup generator that is permanently installed and fully automated.

Most whole-home generators refer to the standby type, which is connected directly to your home’s electrical panel and powered by natural gas or propane, so it starts delivering emergency power for homes within seconds of a power outage.

There’s no need to go outside, flip switches, or deal with cords. It runs automatically, even if you’re not home, keeping food, pets and essentials safe. It supplies power to your entire home or just the essentials, depending on the system you install.

Why Ontario homeowners are choosing standby power

More than ever, Ontario power outages are exposing how vulnerable modern homes are without electricity. Beyond convenience, this is about safety and protection.

Families with electric heating systems are especially at risk

If your home relies on a heat pump, electric furnace, or electric baseboard heating, a blackout during a cold snap could bring indoor temperatures down to dangerous levels within hours. In rural areas or older homes without backup options, this can put your family’s health at risk, particularly young children, seniors, or anyone with medical conditions.

The same applies during extreme heat events

A generator keeps your cooling system running during a summer heat warning, helping prevent heat-related illnesses, protecting pets, and making sure your home remains livable.

Even gas appliances use electricity

It’s also worth noting that most gas appliances still rely on electricity to operate. A natural gas furnace needs a blower motor. A gas water heater needs a vent fan. Without power, these systems shut down, too, even if your gas line is working.

A home backup generator covers these critical gaps and keeps your family protected, no matter the season.

Protects Your Home’s Structure

Since the generator can power heating and cooling, it can protect the building itself. Letting a home go for a lengthy period with no cooling or heating in extreme weather especially (the most likely time for a power outage) can be dangerous to the building itself.

Significant drops in temperature and humidity can cause issues like cracking mouldings, separating floor boards, etc. The opposite is also undesirable; a lack of humidity control and cooling isn’t helpful to the building. Not to mention the fact that when the power comes back on, the A/C (or heat pump) will have to work for a very long time to get it back to a comfortable temperature.

Whole house generator or essential systems only?

Choosing a home generator system isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some homeowners want full backup: heating, cooling, lighting, fridge, well pump, and even home office equipment

(computers, printers, etc.).Others prefer a more focused system that powers just the essentials. For example, a generator can help power critical appliances within the home like the Internet modem and WiFi router that power your security system/cameras, sump pump alarms, smart lighting and so on.

A whole house generator delivers seamless power to your entire home, automatically. It’s the most comprehensive option, and the most worry-free.

A partial load system powers selected circuits, like your furnace, sump pump, and refrigerator. This approach offers a more affordable backup solution while still protecting what matters most.

Your local ClimateCare will assess your home’s layout, usage, and comfort priorities to recommend the system that makes the most sense.

What to expect from backup generator installation

Installing a standby generator for your home involves more than just setting up the equipment. It requires thoughtful planning, proper permitting, and expert integration with your home’s infrastructure.

Here’s how the process works:

  • Site assessment to determine generator location and electrical load
  • Connection to propane or natural gas supply
  • Automatic transfer switch installation — so the system turns on instantly during a blackout
  • Code-compliant installation with all necessary permits (see below)
  • Ongoing maintenance plans available to ensure long-term reliability

About The Installation Itself

A generator has two critical pieces:

  1. A gas connection. Propane or natural gas is what the unit turns into electricity. This requires a licensed gas technician to perform the hookup and ensure it meets/exceeds code requirements and is safe to operate.
  2. An electrical connection to the main breaker panel. This requires a licensed electrician to install, as well as coordinate with the local utility company to shut off the power during the work. For ClimateCare members, they either have a licensed electrician on staff to do this, or they subcontract it out for no additional cost to the customer; a contractor should pay for the ESA permit as part of the job.

Although some electricians offer this service, HVAC companies are typically better set up for the financing of these jobs. They also offer a range of services, providing added convenience to homeowners.
