Heat Pump Affordability: 2024 Rebate Programs for Ontario Homeowners

Home Energy Efficiency Concept Model/Art - Heat Pump Affordability: 2024 Rebate Programs for Ontario Homeowners

Heat pumps efficiently heat and cool homes, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional heating systems. By transferring heat rather than generating it, heat pumps reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, aligning with Canada and Ontario’s goals for greener living. That’s why the provincial and federal governments offer attractive incentives for making the switch. Here are three heat pump rebate programs in 2024 you’ll want to know about.

1. Enbridge’s Clean Home Heating Initiative

This program, supported by the Government of Ontario, offers homeowners in select municipalities up to $4,500 towards installing a hybrid heating system—that is, pairing a heat pump with a natural gas furnace. This initiative aims to optimize energy use by switching between natural gas and electricity based on efficiency and outside temperatures. Therefore, hybrid systems effectively lower energy costs and reduce carbon footprints.

Initially launched in Sault Ste. Marie, St. Catharines, Peterborough, and London, it has expanded to include Ajax, Barrie, Pickering, and Whitby.

2. Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) Program

The OHPA program is intended to help low-to-median-income Canadian households transition from home heating oil to more environmentally friendly heat pump systems. Initially, the OHPA program offered grants of up to $10,000 toward the cost of a qualified heat pump. However, following enhancements announced in the fall of 2023, the program now offers federal grants of up to $15,000 to eligible households, with additional supplementary provincial grants and a one-time bonus payment of $250 available.

These enhancements are part of Canada’s effort to make energy-efficient solutions more accessible and affordable, particularly for low-income households. The goal is to cover the average cost of installing a heat pump, potentially saving households between $1,500 and $4,700 annually on energy bills!

3. IESO & EAP Electric Heat Programs

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) offers free cold-climate air source heat pumps to income-eligible Ontario residents with electrically heated homes through the Energy Affordability Program (EAP). This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance energy efficiency across the province, supported by additional incentives for custom energy efficiency projects and demand response programs to encourage sustainable electricity use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
